FOOD ADDITIVES TO WATCH FOR
What is it?
Where is it found?
What it can do to you.


Acesulfame K-
Artificial sweetener, 200 times sweeter than sugar.
Found in no sugar ice creams, diet sodas
Lung and breast tumors

Aspartame-
Artificial sweetener, zero calories, 180 times sweeter than sugar
Found in soda, yogurt, NutraSweet and Equal
Headache, memory loss, epileptic seizures

Titanium Dioxide-
Used to make things “whiter”
Found in salad dressing, coffee creamer and icing
Toxic lead

Glyphospate-
Used as a weed killer, such as Roundup, on soy and corn crops
Found in soy and corn products
Obesity, learning disabilities and infertility

Butylated Hydroxy Anisole (BHT or BHA)
Used to preserve fats and oils
Found in beer, crackers, butter, cereals, food with added fats
Cancer

Interesterified fat-
Semi soft fat, chemically created, used as an alternative to trans fat
Found in pasties, pies, margarine, frozen dinners and canned soups
Raises LDL cholesterol and blood glucose levels

Red #3 (Erythrosine) and Red #4 (Allura Red)
Most used food dye in America (there is a proposal to ban this food coloring)
Found in Orange, Cherry flavoring; fruit cocktail, candy, chocolate, cereal, pastries, fruit snacks
Thyroid issues

Yellow #5 (Tartrazine) and Yellow #6 (Sunset yellow)
Second and third most used food colorings, banned in Norway and Sweden
Found in cereal, pudding, bread mix, chips, cookies, condiments, cheese, lemonade
Learning disabilities, kidney tumors
Castoreum-
Natural flavoring-Beaver Anal Gland Discharge…up…
Found in vanilla and raspberry flavoring, especially ice cream
Really, I don’t need to go into detail on why not to eat this…it is from a beaver’s anal glands…

HFCS (High Fructose Corn Syrup)-
Highly refined artificial sweetener
Found in almost all things processed; bread, candy, yogurt, Ketchup, salad dressing, canned vegetables, cereals
Increase in LDL cholesterol, diabetes, and tissue damage

Monosodium Glutamate (MSG)-
Amino acid used as a flavor enhancer
Found in Chinese food, snacks, chips, cookies, MOST Campbell soups products, lunchmeats, frozen dinners
MSG over excites cells to the point that they damage itself, depression, and fatigue

Transfat-
Extends shelf life of products
Found in margarine, chips, crackers, baked goods and fast food
Decreases HDL, good cholesterol, increase LDL, heart attack/disease, and inflammation in the whole body

Blue #1 and #2-
Food coloring, banned in Norway, Finland and France
Found in candy, cereal, soft drinks, sports drinks
Behavioral problems, reduction in IQ’s, and cancer

Sodium Sulfate (E221)-
Preservative used in wine making and processed foods
Found in wine and dried fruit
Asthmatic conditions and closure of the airways

Sodium Nitrate-
Used to make old meat products look fresh, bright and red.  In the 1970’s the USDA tried to have this banned.
Found in old meat, hot dogs, bacon, ham, lunchmeat, corned beef, smoked fish
Highly toxic, high carcinogenic once in digestive system

Sulfur Dioxide (E220)-
Preservative (the FDA has banned any Sulfur Dioxide to be placed on any raw fruit or vegetables)
Found in beer, soft drinks, juices, wine, vinegar, potato products


Potassium Bromate-
Increases the volume of the product
Found in white bread, flour and rolls
Cancer

Citric Acid-
Preservative and PH buffer, sharpen taste of food, sour.  It is a natural occurring product, found in lemons, and limes as an example.  Now it is chemically produced
Found in canned fruit, tomato sauce, jams, jellies, soft drinks, meat products, dishwashing detergent
Tooth decay

Sodium Citrate-
Preservative, sharpen taste of food, salt.  Flavor enhancer
Found in sodas, ice cream, condensed milk, flour mixes, jams, cheese, candy
Can cause difficulty if you have IBS, inflammation or stomach ulcers
