VB6 Book Review and Eggplant Meatballs

Here it is!  My first cookbook review!  Thank you Blogging for Books for the opportunity to do this!

I had actually went to go buy this book a month or so ago at our local bookstore, but they were sold out.  Bum deal.  My sister called me shortly after that and told me about this great program she had come upon (Blogging for Books) I signed up, got accepted and I chose my first book, VB6 by Mark Bittman.

This book is more than a cook book, it is a step by step plan on how to become vegan, all before 6 o'clock at night.  Mark had gone to the doctor, and came out of the appointment with some negative results.  He was middle aged, overweight, high cholesterol and pre diabetic.  What was he to do?  His doctor suggested that he become a vegan or start taking medication.  Neither of these sat well with the author.  After some deliberation Mark decided to become a vegan from the time he woke up in the morning until 6 at night.  He could eat what ever he wanted too, and then for dinner until bed time he would eat a non-vegan diet (still a healthy diet).  He has made it work, has been very successful, is now healthy, slimmer and happy!

The introduction of the book goes through Mark's story, how the "diet" works, how long to be on it etc.  The next chapter breaks down the food groups; Fruits, veg, grains, oil, meat, junk food, what they are, best time of the year to purchase them, how to store and how to prepare.

After all of this you move on to the recipes!  350 of them.  I could not wait to make one of them! All of them sounded delicious!  I decided to tackle the eggplant meatballs, for a couple of reasons.  I love eggplant and I love sandwiches!   Below is the printable recipe from the book and pictures of my eggplant meatballs!  I throughly enjoyed them!

Overall I thought the cook book was enjoyable.  It was informative.  Mark breaks down the food groups in an easy to understand format.  The directions are easy to follow, and he uses ingredients that are readily available to me, which is good since I live in Iowa.

I have been vegetarian for a year this month and vegan (or trying really hard to be vegan) for almost 8 months now.  I have a husband and a son who still eat meat, drink milk and chow down on cheese.  I am use to cooking and purchasing these type of foods.  I call us a "blended family, we are 1/3 vegan, 2/3 NOT!  If you are a die hard vegan and can not stand the sight of meat or other animal products this book is not for you!   Mark uses everything from chickens, to eggs, to pork, beef, milk and cheeses.  If you are looking for a way to start transitioning into vegan-ism then yes, this book is for you!

If you have a chance to pick up this book, and animal products do not make you squirm:) then go get it!  You will LOVE the recipes!
